Take a Weekend Trip to County Durham

We’ve all been there, you’ve been working hard, the memory of your last holiday seems like a distant blur, and all you really want to do is go away for a few days, or even a few weeks. But if you would love to get away, but can’t to leave the UK, then why not try a holiday in the UK itself, and more specifically, County Durham?

But why County Durham? Well, while taking a trip to another British city, such as London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Cardiff can be really good fun, smaller towns also have a lot to offer, just in a much quieter setting, so after much deliberation, this article is going to focus on County Durham, in the north of England, because of the many unique attractions, great shops and beautiful hotels in County Durham.

With so much to do in Durham, visitors will be spoilt for choice as to what activity to do and what attractions to visit during their time in the county. From castles, historic durham university houses and gardens to museums, galleries and even cathedrals and churches, there is no shortage of things to do and places to visit. One of the most popular things to do in Durham is to visit the Beamish Museum, and this is particularly popular with families who have young children, as it gives them the chance to ‘step back in time’ to another world, and see England as it was in the early 1900s and find out what life would have been like then compared to today. Other family attractions include the Thorpe Farm Centre, Adventure Valley, which is packed full of indoor fun and the Broom House Farm Adventure Trail.

If you don’t have children, then there are lots of different things that you can do in the town, such as visiting the Pow Hill Country Park, the Durham University Botanic Garden or the fabulous medieval castle, Raby Castle. But Durham isn’t just for site seeing, but also for a wealth of other activities such as shopping, fine dining and theatre. In particular the Gala Theatre and Cinema in Durham City and the Empire Theatre in Consett, are two of the finest theatre in the district, and present a number of shows each year, from both touring and local companies.
